The city of Port de Paix is the capital city of Nord-Ouest province in northern Haiti. The city has a population of approximately 125,000 citizens. This city right now is the incoming center of smuggled goods from Miami, name it and it probably shows up here. The city is somewhat of a forgotten place, but it does have a very lively and interesting port. The wharf itself is the ideal place to absorb the character of the town and get a sense of Haitian commerce. The dock can be piled quite high with second hand refrigerators, bicycles, t-shirts, televisions, etc., etc. The entire area around the wharf transforms into a rowdy street market when the cargo boats arrive. The boats are like most structures in Haiti, quite colorful.
There are a couple of hotels in Port de Paix. The Princesse Hotel is located somewhat near the airport and is about $30US per night for a double. The other is quite a nice property right on the bay called the Hotel Marina Breeze. This hotel has very spacious rooms, friendly and accommodating staff, along with a bar and restaurant. If you stay at this hotel it is worth asking for breakfast to be included in the cost of the room, but make sure you mention it, or you may be charged at check-out.
There are some touristy type things to see and do in Port de Paix. In the center of town, there is a large, well-kept, gorgeous blue and white cathedral. This very well may be one of the prettiest and most memorable cathedrals in all of Haiti. Just slightly outside of town the beaches are quite noteworthy. However, you and whoever you may bring with you may be the only tourists on the beach. As tourism prospers in Haiti, so will this town. This city is really worth visiting during your trip to Haiti.
